Unsafe places become safe. Street kids clean up litter. Girls play alongside the boys who once dominated the sports field. The entire neighbourhood comes out to watch the new local football tournament. Youth are the change they want to see in their communities.

Because ISA helps youth discover for themselves what they are good at and what is important to them, they become game changers who continue to do what it is they believe in. Focussing on long term and personal training means that community sports coaches and – sport organisations continuously create new game changers. Our goal is a game without end.

“Sports is for boys, is what my father always said. You would only ever see boys on the sports field in my neighbourhood, so I always quickly walked by. Until one day after school a young woman called out to me. I threw down my bag and she passed me the ball. Since then I play basketball almost every day. I am good at it, that’s what my coach says. She encourages me to dream big. I hope that one day I will become a professional basketballer. Or a doctor.”

“I used to work as a prostitute. I couldn’t even think about playing sports. Until one day I was invited to play in a soccer match. I loved it! The coach helped me regain my self-confidence, told me about safe sex and taught me how I could make better choices. Eventually I left the sex industry and was trained as an ISA coach. It was a dream come true! Now I help other girls and sex workers to make their dreams reality.”

COMMUNITIES

“The neighbourhood I live in was up until a couple of years ago very unsafe. Parents didn’t dare let their children play on the streets for fear of kidnappers. Students must come directly home from school. As a basketball coach I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know what. ISA helped me to create a safe place to play and to build trust among and between the youth. I now organise 3 against 3 basketball matches, which uplifts the sphere of the entire neighbourhood. Everyone comes out to cheer on their favourite team.”
