As we say farewell to 2023, we at ISA Europe are thrilled to reflect on the remarkable achievements of the SheGotGame programme. This year marked the successful completion of this inspiring initiative, which has significantly impacted the lives of many young girls across Europe.
The SheGotGame programme was an inspiring journey that spanned six months, during which 8 coaches and 10 Girl Leaders created safe spaces for 315 teen girls by organising weekly sports sessions and events. These activities provided much-needed opportunities for girls, especially from minority groups, who often lack safe and inclusive environments to engage in sports and community activities. For more data, see the results of our survey we did after the programme questioning the Girl Leaders and Coaches. One of the girl leaders said: “During this programme we got all kinds of insights and experiences that you don’t get to hear otherwise. I find teaching much more fun to do now. For example, being in front of the group was quite exciting at first, but since I only have to do it for girls now, I feel much more comfortable with that.”
One of the programme’s standout achievements was its expansion beyond the initially targeted four communities, eventually encompassing seven communities. This exceeded our expectations and exemplified the programme’s adaptability and reach. Notably, the programme took root in various cities, including Amsterdam, Den Bosch, Nijmegen, and Tilburg, creating a sense of unity and fun, which are crucial for both physical and mental health.
The impact of SheGotGame was multifaceted. Girl Leaders and Coaches not only gained valuable skills in sports leadership and mentoring but also reported significant boosts in self-esteem and confidence. One of the coaches said: ”The programme has personally ’empowered’ me much more, so to speak. The feeling I used to experience, of we have to give way to boys, there is no place or no money for activities, that has really been taken away a lot more. I also feel much more supported as a person because of the programme.” These experiences empowered them to lead sessions and events independently, marking a significant step forward in their personal and professional growth.
Our partnering community organisations also benefited immensely from the programme. They enhanced their capacity to train female coaches and youth leaders and professionalised their operations. One coach said: ”We really developed ourselves in guiding those girls and in showing a professional attitude. I really enjoyed that.” The exchange of knowledge and practices across different towns added another layer of value to the programme.
As a result of the programme’s success we are currently working on a SheGotGame 2.0 in which we will build on the results of the SheGotGame programme and continue empowering young girls with this new programme!
As we look ahead to 2024, we are filled with pride and optimism. The SheGotGame programe has set a precedent for empowering young girls through sports and community engagement. We are excited to continue this journey and build upon the solid foundation laid in 2023.
We wish all our partners and supporters a wonderful New Year, filled with joy, success, and continued collaboration towards empowering young girls across Europe!
