In Bamako, Aboubacar Warima’s passion for karate has been a guiding force, shaping both his life and his community. For years, karate at Dojo Tabale followed a traditional path—strict training, discipline, and respect. But everything changed when Aboubacar crossed paths with the International Sports Alliance (ISA) in 2022. This encounter sparked a transformation not only in him but also in the way karate was taught at his dojo.

“Before ISA, we trained the same way for years. After attending their sessions, I realised we could make karate fun and still maintain discipline,” Aboubacar reflects. He introduced games and lighter activities to warm up the young participants before practice. What started as a small change evolved into a new philosophy at Dojo Tabale. The dojo became a place where laughter and learning coexist, attracting not only young people but also their families. Prejudices about karate being rigid and harsh began to fade.

The newfound approach brought fame and recognition to Dojo Tabale. “We’ve hosted major competitions, gathering almost all the dojos from six districts of Bamako,” Aboubacar says proudly. These events were unheard of before the dojo participated in ISA’s training. The dojo’s reputation flourished, and so did its membership, as more young people embraced karate—not just as a sport, but as a community.

Aboubacar’s experience with ISA also shifted his perspective on the role of sports in society. “It’s not just about athletes; it’s about the community. Sports can drive social change,” he shares. Athletes from Dojo Tabale are now involved in initiatives promoting fitness and well-being beyond the gym, contributing to the overall health of the community.

Aboubacar’s journey is one of transformation—from a traditional dojo to a thriving hub of joy, competition, and community development. His vision for Dojo Tabale, supported by ISA, continues to inspire many in Bamako to see sports as a catalyst for change.
